Identity Testing

The first step in any quality control analysis should be to test the identity of the ingredient you are using. If it is not the chemical or botanical extract you think it is, none of the other tests are relevant. ID testing is done using a number of different methodologies, depending on the specific sample you are analyzing. If it is just a single chemical compound, like L-theanine, you can use FTIR to identify if it is the correct chemical compound. If it is a botanical extract, you need to use HP-TLC. Sometimes you need to use orthogonal techniques to get a full picture. Perhaps you need an FTIR, NMR, and ICP to determine the identity of a complex salt.
